Storm Debris Removal Deadline Extended for Northeast Tennessee Counties

In response to ongoing recovery efforts following Tropical Storm Helene, county officials across Northeast Tennessee have announced an extension for the removal of private and commercial property storm-related debris. The new deadline for residents to place debris in the right of way is now March 2, 2025. After this deadline, property owners may be responsible for the disposal of disaster-related debris.

This extension provides additional time for residents in Cocke, Greene, Hamblen, Hawkins, Johnson, Unicoi, and Washington counties who have experienced delays in clearing their properties. The original deadline of January 31 has been extended to ensure that all storm-damaged areas have sufficient opportunity to complete the debris removal process.

“We recognize that recovering from the devastating impacts of Helene can take time,” said TEMA Director Patrick C. Sheehan. “This extension ensures that everyone in the affected areas has support to clean up storm-related debris. By placing debris in the right of way by March 2, we can continue the cleanup process and help communities restore normalcy.”

Property owners are asked to continue following the same debris placement guidelines:

  • Place debris in the right of way: Debris should be placed along the curb or in public areas adjacent to the street, ensuring it doesn’t obstruct traffic or utilities.
  • Separate using FEMA guidelines: Organize debris into separate piles—vegetative debris (tree limbs, branches), construction and demolition debris (fencing, shingles), and other storm-damaged items. The FEMA debris removal guidelines can be found on TEMA’s website.
  • Ensure access is safe: Avoid blocking roadways, driveways, sidewalks, or drainage systems.County officials encourage property owners to take advantage of the extended deadline to ensure all debris is collected, helping reduce hazards such as blocked roadways and other public safety concerns.

Carter County announced an earlier deadline for storm debris removal, requiring property owners to place debris in the right of way by January 17. Other counties in the region are following the March 2 deadline to complete their own debris collection efforts.
