FAQs & Resources
Frequently Asked Questions:
Property owners have the option to use gas wells for domestic purposes, such as home heating. If you would like to exercise this option, please refer to the Application to Change Operators section for more information on taking over a well.
If you are not interested using the gas or have other questions about a well on your property, please contact the Oil & Gas Supervisor to discuss the specific situation.
The Oil & Gas Program is responsible for the environmental protection of the state’s air and water. We do not conduct viability tests but can assist in identifying potential service providers.
The Oil & Gas Program does not adjudicate property rights, including mineral rights. For questions regarding well usage, royalties, or leases, a court of proper jurisdiction must be consulted.
The Oil & Gas Program maintains a database of well information. For small requests, the Program may be able to email well files. For large requests or to access all files maintained by the Program, please send an external hard drive of at least 1TB to the Knoxville Environmental Field Office with a self-addressed, stamped envelope for return of the hard drive. All files will be copied to the hard drive and returned to the customer within 10 business days from receipt.
The Oil & Gas Program regulations can be found at Chapters 0400-51 through 0400-58 of the Rules of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. Statutory citations may be found at Title 60, Chapter 1 of the Tennessee Code Annotated. Links to these publications are in the tiles below.
