Hazard Mitigation

Hazard mitigation focuses on reducing long-term risk to people, property, and infrastructure from future disasters. It includes planning, projects, and other activities that help communities lessen the impacts of hazards before they occur. 

TEMA’s Hazard Mitigation program supports statewide resilience by working with local governments, state partners, and other eligible applicants on mitigation planning, project development, and grant opportunities. These efforts help communities identify risks, prioritize solutions, and pursue actions that reduce future disaster losses. 

What Hazard Mitigation Includes

Hazard mitigation can include a range of activities designed to reduce vulnerability and strengthen resilience. Depending on community needs and program eligibility, this may include:

• Hazard mitigation planning
• Risk assessments and project development
• Flood risk reduction projects
• Infrastructure protection and retrofitting
• Property acquisition or elevation
• Safe rooms and protective measures
• Other long-term resilience projects
