Driver License Knowledge Permit Test Online

Tennesseans aged 15 to 17 seeking to obtain their driver's license can now take their knowledge test online under the supervision of a parent or legal guardian via Tennessee Proctor ID App. To proctor an online Knowledge Test, eligible Tennesseans obtain a highly secure personal identification verified against their Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security record.

Online Knowledge Test Requirements

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be at least 15 years old and no older than 17 years old.
  • A parent or legal guardian may serve as a proctor for up to five (5) applicants.

Technology Requirements

  • Applicants must use a computer, laptop, or tablet to take the test (cell phones are not permitted for testing).
  • Use the latest version of a recommended browser:
    • Chrome
    • Edge
    • Safari
    • Firefox
  • The parent or legal guardian serving as the proctor must have a compatible phone or tablet to download and use the Tennessee Proctor ID App.

Test Format

  • The test consists of 30 questions.
  • Applicants have 60 minutes to complete the test.
  • A minimum score of 80% is required to pass.
  • The test is available in English and Spanish.

During the Test

  • Applicants must remain on the test screen at all times. Navigating away from the test window will result in automatic failure.
  • At the 30-minute mark, the parent or legal guardian must complete mid-test authentication by scanning the QR code using the Tennessee Proctor ID App.
  • If the test is completed (pass or fail) within 30 minutes, reauthentication is not required.
  • Failure to complete mid-test authentication will result in automatic failure.
  • NOT allowed during the test: 
    • Ask for help answering test questions.
    • Have electronic or recording devices in their possession.
    • Have notes or written reference material.

Technical Interruptions

  • If a network issue or power outage lasts more than 60 minutes, the test will result in automatic failure.
  • To resume a test interrupted for less than 60 minutes, the parent or legal guardian must re-authenticate by scanning the QR code.

Retesting Policy

  • Applicants who fail must wait 24 hours before retesting.
  • Applicants may take the online knowledge test a maximum of two (2) times.

Additional Information

  • After successfully passing the knowledge test, applicants are eligible to take the Class M (Motorcycle) test online.
  • The Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security may require an applicant to retake the knowledge test at a driver services center, even if they passed the online test.


Step 1: Get the Tennessee Proctor ID App

The parent or legal guardian serving as the proctor must download the Tennessee Proctor ID app on their device. Do not download the app on the applicant's device.

In the App Store or Google Play search Tennessee Proctor ID, look for the icon, and follow the steps to download/install.

Note for iPhone users: The Tennessee Proctor ID App requires an iPhone 6 (iOS 13.1) or newer.
