State mitigation planning helps Tennessee identify natural and man-made hazard risks, assess vulnerabilities, and establish long-term priorities for reducing future disaster impacts. This process supports decisions that protect people, property, infrastructure, and communities across the state.
TEMA coordinates state mitigation planning in collaboration with state agencies, regional partners, local officials, and other stakeholders. The State Hazard Mitigation Plan is the primary document that guides this work and helps align mitigation efforts with Tennessee’s long-term resilience goals.

2023 State Hazard Mitigation Plan

The 2023 plan is effective through October 2028, and the next update is expected before the current approval period ends.

State mitigation planning is an ongoing process. TEMA reviews and updates the State Hazard Mitigation Plan on a regular cycle so the plan reflects current risk information, changing conditions, completed mitigation efforts, and statewide priorities.
This process includes coordination with state agencies, local officials, regional partners, and other stakeholders. These updates help keep Tennessee’s mitigation strategy current and support continued eligibility for certain federal mitigation funding opportunities.
