Letter of Map Changes
If you believe your property was incorrectly shown in a flood zone, or that changes to your land should alter the flood-hazard designation, you can request a formal review through a Letter of Map Change (LOMC). A LOMC asks FEMA to re-evaluate whether your structure or land should be considered part of a “Special Flood Hazard Area.”
What a LOMC Can Do
Depending on your situation, a LOMC may result in a determination that your property:
- Is not in a high-flood-risk zone after all (for land/structures on naturally high ground),
- Has been raised (for instance, by adding fill) and should no longer be treated as high-risk, or
- Reflects changes in floodplain maps due to updated flood-hazard analysis for larger areas.
How to Request a LOMC
A homeowner or a licensed Tennessee surveyor or engineer will need to complete one of FEMA’s official forms (MT-EZ, MT-1, or MT-2), depending on the type of change requested. For more information on a LOMC, the necessary forms, and step-by-step guides and tutorial information, visit FEMA's Letter of Map Amendment & Letter of Map Revision-Based on Fill Process webpage.
