    In response to ongoing recovery efforts following Tropical Storm Helene, county officials across Northeast Tennessee have announced an extension for the removal of private and commercial property storm-related debris. The new deadline for residents to place debris in the right of way is now March 2, 2025. After this deadline, property owners may be responsible for the disposal of disaster-related debris.

    Today, the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) announced that Cocke, Greene, Hamblen, Hawkins, Johnson, Unicoi, and Washington counties continue to work with state partners to assist with the safe and efficient removal of storm-related debris. Local officials urge private and commercial property owners to place separated, storm-related debris in designated right-of-way areas by January 31, 2025. After this deadline, residents may be responsible for the disposal of disaster-related debris.

    Local, state, and federal partners have begun coordinated efforts to clear debris from Douglas Lake following the aftermath of Tropical Storm Helene. Leading this critical recovery project, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), in support of the state of Tennessee, will coordinate the removal and disposal of disaster-related debris in and around the Douglas Reservoir. This initiative is part of a multi-agency collaboration to safeguard public safety and downstream infrastructure.

    Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee announced the approval of additional assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Public Assistance Program. The program is now available to eligible jurisdictions and certain private, non-profit organizations in a total of 14 counties following significant flooding from Hurricane Helene that impacted Northeast Tennessee on September 26.

    As of October 21, FEMA has approved more than $13.5 million in Individual and Housing Program funds. Individuals in Carter, Cocke, Greene, Hamblen, Hawkins, Johnson, Unicoi, and Washington counties can apply for FEMA Individual Assistance (IA) online, by phone at 1-800-621-3362, or in-person at a Multi-Agency Resource Center or Disaster Recovery Center. The deadline to apply for IA is December 2, 2024.
