Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security installs kiosk

MEMPHIS – Students, faculty, and staff at the University of Memphis (UofM) will not have to travel far when it comes time to renew or replace a Tennessee driver license or state identification card.  The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security on Monday announced it has installed a driver license self-service kiosk on the UofM’s campus.

The kiosk is accessible from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday.  Located in the V. Lane Rawlins Service Court Facility at 506 University Drive, the kiosk is open to the general public, as well as students and staff.

“We appreciate the University of Memphis for the opportunity to provide this service on campus,” Commissioner Bill Gibbons said. “It will be a real convenience for those who attend or teach classes here on campus, and will help us reduce wait times at our Memphis area driver services centers.” Gibbons made the announcement with Michael Hogan, Director of Driver Services and Vice President of Student Affairs, Rosie Bingham.

Tennessee citizens may use the kiosk to renew or replace an existing driver license or state identification card. The kiosk takes a photo and uses facial verification to verify the image on record. It processes credit card payment and prints an interim license, which is valid for 20 days. The new secure license or ID card is mailed to the applicant’s home.

“The UofM is pleased to partner with The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security,” said Dr. M. David Rudd, President of the University of Memphis. “This kiosk will make it dramatically easier and more efficient for university faculty, staff, and students to renew their licenses. Given the time constraints and demands we face on a daily basis, we’re grateful to be able to partner in providing this service for our campus community.”

There are several other self-service kiosk locations across Shelby County, including:
