For Vehicle Owners

Vehicle Search Coming In 2027

The Abandoned Vehicle Portal is currently in its initial rollout period. Law enforcement agencies, towing companies, and other authorized entities are not required to enter abandoned or immobile vehicle information in the portal until 90 days after the portal is operational. To avoid incomplete search results, vehicle owner search functionality will not be available until that time. The Department will post the date authorized entities are required to enter vehicle information in the portal on this page. Until then, please contact the appropriate law enforcement agency or towing company to inquire about a towed vehicle.

Looking for Your Vehicle?

If your vehicle has been towed and entered in the Tennessee Abandoned Vehicle Portal, you can search the portal and view available information about your vehicle.

If your search results in a matching record, the following information will be available to you:

  • The location of your vehicle
  • The contact information for the law enforcement agency or towing company in possession of your vehicle
  • Available vehicle status information
  • Applicable towing and release fees
    • Note: The portal may not include all fees due. Please contact the law enforcement agency or towing company in possession of your vehicle to determine the total payment due to reclaim your vehicle.

Please Note:
Not all towed vehicles are required to be entered in the portal. In addition, vehicles may not appear in the portal immediately after being towed. If you cannot locate your vehicle, please contact the appropriate law enforcement agency or towing company.

Frequently Asked Questions

A law enforcement agency or a towing company that takes possession of an abandoned or immobile vehicle is required to enter that vehicle’s information in the portal. In addition, if a vehicle being stored by a garagekeeper is available for release to the owner, the garagekeeper must enter the vehicle information in the portal if the garagekeeper intends to charge a storage fee for a period exceeding 21 days.

These reporting requirements take effect 90 days after the portal is operational.

An abandoned vehicle is a vehicle that is physically located in Tennessee that:

  • Is left unattended on public property for more than 10 days;
  • Is in an obvious state of disrepair and is left unattended on public property for more than three days;
  • Has remained illegally on public property for a period of more than 48 hours;
  • Is left unattended and interferes with or impedes the orderly flow of traffic or is left unattended during or prior to inclement weather conditions;
  • Is unattended by reason of the arrest of the driver of the motor vehicle;
  • Is creating a hazard, blocking access to public or private property, or parked illegally;
  • Has remained on private property without the consent of the owner or person in control of the property for more than 48 hours;
  • Has remained on private residential property without the consent of the owner or person in control of the property; or
  • Has been stored, parked, or left in a garage, trailer park, or any type of storage or parking lot for more than 30 consecutive days.

An immobile vehicle is a motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, or part of a motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer that is immobilized and incapable of moving under its own power due to an accident, mechanical breakdown, weather condition, or other emergency situation.

Select Search for My Vehicle and enter the requested vehicle information. If a matching vehicle has been entered in the portal, the search results will display available information about the law enforcement agency or towing company in possession of your vehicle.

Searches by vehicle owners are free of charge.

If your search does not result in a matching record, please contact the appropriate law enforcement agency or towing company for more information about your vehicle. You may also search the portal again at a later time, as towed vehicles may not appear in the portal immediately.

If your search results in a matching record, the results will provide the location of the vehicle, the contact information for the authorized entity who has possession of your vehicle, and the applicable towing and release fees. Additional fees, such as a daily storage fee, may apply. Please contact the named entity to determine the total payment due and instructions to reclaim your vehicle.

A search may not result in a matching record because the circumstance under which the vehicle was towed does not require the authorized entity to enter the vehicle’s information in the portal, or the vehicle’s information has not been entered in the portal yet. Try searching again later or contact the appropriate law enforcement agency or towing company for more information.

For vehicles entered in the portal, the last known registered owner and any lienholders on file will receive a mailed notice providing information on the location of the vehicle, the entity who possesses the vehicle, and the right to reclaim the vehicle within 20 days of receipt of the notice.

If you do not reclaim your vehicle within 20 days of receipt of the notice you receive in the mail, the authorized entity in possession of your vehicle may sell the vehicle at public auction. You must reclaim and pay the fees due within 20 days of receipt of your notice to preserve the rights to your vehicle.
