Captain Jimmie Johnson, III

Jimmie Johnson III was promoted as Captain of the Tennessee Highway Patrol over the Memphis District in 2016. Prior to his promotion, he served as Troop Lieutenant over Shelby, Fayette, Haywood, and Hardeman Counties. He also served as Troop Sergeant in Shelby County before being transferred to Crockett and Lauderdale Counties. He was selected to serve as the Memphis District’s Evidence Custodian, a newly created position, while being stationed in Haywood County from 1997 to 2007. He completed six years in the United States Marine Corp before beginning his career with the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Johnson has received the 1998 District Trooper of the year award, the 2004 through 2007 MADD DUI Enforcement Award for Haywood County and the Colonel’s Unit Citation for serving on the Presidential Inauguration Detail. Currently, he is a Certified Trainer with the Talent Management Division, DUI Instructor, Meth Task Force Site Safety Officer and Hostage Negotiator. He is a 2003 graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police and Command, 2015 graduate of Department of Safety’s Commissioner’s Leadership Academy, 2016 graduate of the Tennessee Government Executive Institute, and earned a Bachelors in Organizational Leadership from the University of Memphis. 

He is also active in his community serving as a TN Achieves mentor and partnering with local groups within the City of Memphis for inner-city youth. Johnson has three children.
