Treatment and Recovery

The TDMHSAS Division of Substance Abuse Services provides treatment and recovery supports to upwards of 20,000 Tennesseans every year.  Our services help people who are uninsured and no means to pay for the treatment they need.  Additional programs are designed to help special populations including women, pregnant women, and adolescents.  Read on to learn more about our Continuum of Care and recovery support services.

Essential Services

Through a mix of state and federal funds, TDMHSAS and its community partners are able to provide evidence-based treatment services to a growing number of Tennesseans.  Click to learn more about services and eligibility.

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) is an evidence-based option for people trying to overcome a substance use disorder. TDMHSAS contracts with community providers for MAT for people with no means to pay.

On the path to recovery, individuals often need help to regain their health, secure a place to live, find a job, build a social support network and get back on their feet. It essentially means, getting some help to get back in the swing of things.

The value of lived-experience in achieving recovery is an essential facet of what we do. TDMHSAS and its providers have multiple programs in this field which employ Certified Peer Recovery Specialists to help people along their recovery journey.

The term "co-occurring disorders" is used to describe a person or service recipient as having at least one mental health disorder along with a substance use disorder that is co-occurring at the same time.  Proper diagnosis and treatment are critical to a person’s recovery.  

Individuals who are pregnant, intravenous drug users, abusing substances, and in medically-monitored withdrawal management may be eligible for prevention, treatment and recovery support services and activities.

Treatment is available for teenagers who have a primary or secondary alcohol or other drug abuse or dependency diagnosis or co-occurring substance use and psychiatric diagnosis. Adolescent Services are available through residential, outpatient, and day treatment.

Project Rural Recovery uses four mobile clinics to serve 20 rural counties with integrated physical and behavioral health services. Click the link for more info and counties served.

Through the Tennessee Collegiate Recovery Initiative, we are working to connect allies with training, resources, and contacts to support the recovery needs of students.

The Problem Gambling Program is a service designed to provide outreach, education, and referral services to individuals and their families who have experienced problems with compulsive gambling.
