Flash Report #2 Severe Weather

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • The State Emergency Operations Center in Nashville maintains a Level 4 – Elevated status to support local requests following Thursday’s severe weather in Middle and East Tennessee and to continue Tropical Storm Helene recovery.
  • TEMA personnel continue to coordinate with local officials to assess damages and ensure life safety needs are met, at the request of local officials.
  • At this time, the National Weather Service has confirmed five tornadoes from the weather system.
  • Emergency Services Coordinators (ESCs) representing state departments and partner agencies are monitoring the situation and standing by to aid local jurisdictions.

CURRENT SITUATION

A severe weather system impacted Middle and East Tennessee on Thursday, February 6, 2025.  Counties reporting damage include Fentress, Grainger, Jackson, Morgan, Overton, Putnam, and Sevier counties.  At this time, the National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed five tornadoes from the weather system, with preliminary storm survey results from Morgan, Grainger, Jackson, Putnam, and Overton counties.

According to NWS, the Morgan County tornado in the Deer Lodge community is the first confirmed February tornado in Morgan County on record.  NWS continues to survey other areas to assess storm damage. 

TEMA is coordinating with state and local partners to provide assistance, as requested.  Tennesseans are advised to contact the local Emergency Management Agency for donation or volunteer needs.

POWER OUTAGES & UTILITIES

As of 4 p.m. CST on February 7, there are less than 300 reports of power outages statewide.

The Tennessee Department of Health has confirmed two weather-related fatalities in Morgan County.

Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) is providing assistance with law enforcement responsibilities.

TENNESSEE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is continuing to monitor road conditions across the state. Check road conditions and closures on TDOT’s Smartway map.

PROTECTIVE ACTIONS/KEY MESSAGES

  • Do not enter damaged buildings or hazardous locations.
  • Do not drive through flooded roadways and walkways.
  • Avoid downed power lines.
  • If your house or property sustained damage, take pictures before cleanup efforts and contact your insurance company. Complaint line for insurance: (615) 741-2218 or 1-800-342-4029.
  • Even after the storm passes, power outages have their own set of hazards. Be careful with generators — never use them inside or in garages to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Use flashlights, not candles, to avoid risk of fire.
  • Contact your local emergency management agency if you need immediate assistance.

FORECAST

Memphis: Mostly cloudy, with a temperature rising to around 59 by 5am. East wind 5 to 10 mph becoming south after midnight.

Jackson: Mostly cloudy, with a temperature falling to near 48 by 11pm, then rising to around 59 during the remainder of the night. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Nashville: A 30% chance of showers, mainly between 1am and 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a temperature rising to around 55 by 5am. East northeast wind 5 to 10 mph becoming south after midnight.

Knoxville: A 20% chance of showers after 3am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 46. Northeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm.

Chattanooga: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 49. Northeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm.
