Flash Report #1 Tornadoes and Severe Weather

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The State Emergency Operations Center in Nashville is activated to support local requests and monitor the ongoing severe weather in West and Middle Tennessee.
  • Requests for assistance are being fulfilled.
  • Emergency Service Coordinators (ESCs) from TDOT, THP, TN Department of Human Services, and more are monitoring the situation and standing by to provide assistance to local jurisdictions.

CURRENT SITUATION

Tornadoes and severe weather impacted Tennessee on Saturday, December 9, 2023. Affected counties include Cheatham, Davidson, Dickson, Gibson, Montgomery, Robertson, Stewart, Sumner, Trousdale, Weakley, and Wilson counties. The Storm Prediction Center has 13 preliminary tornado reports from yesterday's storm. The National Weather Service is sending out survey teams to assess storm damage.

TEMA is coordinating with state and local partners to fulfill resource requests and provide assistance.  

POWER OUTAGES & UTILITIES

  • As of 10:00 a.m., there have been 30,960 reports of power outages statewide.
  • Sumner County currently has two water utilities running on generator power.

SHELTERS

There have been several shelters, both American Red Cross Managed and Independently Operated, that have been opened to assist affected Tennesseans.

THP

  • THP continues to provide assistance with traffic control and other law enforcement responsibilities.

TDH

  • The Tennessee Department of Health has confirmed six weather-related fatalities, three in Montgomery County and three in Davidson County.

TDOT

  • TDOT is continuing to monitor road conditions across the state. Current road closures include:
  • SR 6 and SR 258 in Sumner County
  • SR 45 EB and SR 45 WB in Davidson County

 

PROTECTIVE ACTIONS/KEY MESSAGES

  • Do not enter damaged buildings or hazardous locations.
  • Hire only licensed contractors and do not pay the total amount before the work is complete. More tips for consumers after a disaster can be found here.
  • Avoid downed power lines.
  • If your house or property sustained damage, take pictures before cleanup efforts and contact your insurance company.
  • Contact your local emergency management agency if you need immediate assistance.

FORECAST

  • Memphis: Clearing skies with high temperatures in the upper 40s. Northwesterly winds up to 15mph. No precipitation. Overnight temperatures drop into the upper 20s and winds will become light.
  • Nashville: Partly cloudy skies with high temperatures in the upper 40s. Northwesterly winds up to 10mph, gusting up to 25mph. Overnight temperatures drop into the upper 20s. Winds will decrease and shift westerly overnight. No precipitation.
  • Knoxville: Rain continues through evening with new totals up to 0.25”. Temperatures will drop from the 50s to the 40s. Northwesterly winds from 10-15mph with gusts up to 25mph through tomorrow. Cloudy skies will persist until clearing tomorrow.
  • Chattanooga: Rain continues through midday with new totals up to 0.10”. Temperatures will drop from the 50s to the 40s. Northwesterly winds from 10-15mph with gusts up to 25mph through tomorrow. Cloudy skies will begin clearing overnight, with temperatures dropping into the lower 30s.
