TUNE IT TUESDAY 25 Blog Post - 2

The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) is teaming up with Lowe’s and local emergency management agencies for Tune It Tuesday on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.

From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., you can stop by more than 20 Lowe’s stores across Tennessee to get help programming your NOAA Weather Radio. Local emergency management teams will make sure your radio is set up the right way so you can get alerts for your area. Our partners will also share tips and resources to help you and your family stay safe in an emergency.

Why is this important? Weather radios work even when the power goes out or cell service doesn’t. They’re one of the best ways to get life-saving alerts fast.

Each participating location will be giving away a limited number of NOAA Weather Radios for community members, courtesy of the Tennessee Valley Authority. Lowe’s locations will also have radios available for purchase. Additionally, TEMA will be providing batteries for residents with new or used weather radios at all participating sites, while supplies last.

Helpful Questions & Answers

Q: What is Tune It Tuesday?
This event is all about helping Tennesseans stay safe. Your emergency management personnel will help you program your NOAA Weather Radio (new or old) and share preparedness resources.

Q: Why do weather radios matter?
Weather radios are one of the most reliable tools during forecasted severe weather or an emergency.  They work if the power goes out, cell phones don't have service, or the internet is down.  That means you can still get life-saving alerts when it matters most.

Q: Will weather radios be handed out for free?
Each location will have a limited number of free NOAA Weather Radios, courtesy of the Tennessee Valley Authority. They will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

Q: Do I need to bring my own weather radio?
You don't have to, but you can! If you already have a radio, bring it with you and teams will do their best to program it correctly. If you don't have one, you may be able to receive a free radio (while supplies last) or purchase one at Lowe's.

Q: Do I need to register or sign up in advance?
No registration is needed.  Just stop by a participating Lowe's store between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. local time on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.

Q: Will batteries be provided?
TEMA is providing our partner agencies with free batteries for new or used radios at all participating locations, while supplies last.

Q: What station should my weather radio be programmed to?
There are 21 NOAA radio stations in Tennessee.  Find station listings from the National Weather Service here.

Q: Who can I contact if I have more questions?
Please reach out to your local emergency management agency for more details about the event in your community.

Q: What if I can't make it on September 23?
You can still buy a weather radio at your convenience, and your local emergency management agency or local meteorologists may be able to help you with programming.

Q: Why isn't my county participating?
Not every county is able to participate in the event this year.  We're very thankful for the agencies who are taking part, and we hope more counties can join in the future!
