Nashville, Tenn. - The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) was awarded for Best Video Production, External category for the Graduation Transportation Engineering Program (GTEP) video at the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Committee of Transportation Communications annual meeting.

Each year the committee recognizes outstanding communications and public relations work. The contest is considered the premier competition in the transportation industry and the awards have become a standard of public relations excellence among state departments of transportation. Winners demonstrate the best examples of innovation, planning, production, execution, and evaluation of results and budget. The 2023 winners were announced on October 18 during the annual meeting hosted in Portland, Maine. This year’s competition saw over 180 nominations in a variety of categories.

The entry highlighted GTEP, TDOT’s highly competitive program which includes a two-year, professional development sequence to allow entry-level civil engineers and recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in disciplines such as Geodetics, Construction, Roadway Design, and Traffic Operations and Design. “In each discussion with my peer commissioners of transportation, the number one topic is the recruitment of the next generation of engineers who are required to build America’s future,” said Deputy Governor and TDOT Commissioner Butch Eley. “When posed with creating the most attractive and competitive campaign to recruit and retain young engineers, our TDOT team exceeded expectations by winning the top award in a competition among the other states. I’m incredibly proud of our team for this accolade, as well as their ability to be forward-thinking in our collective desire to hire and develop the best engineers to support Tennessee’s needed infrastructure growth.”

AASHTO’s Committee on Transportation Communications is comprised of public affairs professionals from the 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia.
