I-440 Reconstruction Project Update

Friday, October 12, 2018 | 10:30am

NASHVILLE, Tenn. –Motorists will soon see signs of initial construction activity on the Interstate 440 Reconstruction Project. The contract for the $152 million project was awarded to Kiewit Infrastructure South Group in August, and includes an August 2020 completion date.

Preliminary construction activities such as lighting relocation, noise wall construction, shoulder paving, and ramp work, will get underway in November. Lane closures for these activities will be limited to the overnight hours of 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.

The largest component of the project, replacing the deteriorated concrete with asphalt throughout the corridor and removal of the grass median, will begin in March 2019. Instead of saw cutting and removing the existing concrete, the contractor will rubblize it into gravel and use the material in the new roadway base.

Barrier rail will be installed to protect the construction area for the rubblization operations and median removal in late February 2019.  At that time, the roadway will be reduced to two travel lanes in each direction during the day and one travel lane in each direction from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. The lane reductions on I-440 will be in place until the project is completed in August 2020.

In order to expedite the project, the contractor will have 24-hour operations. Residents adjacent to the I-440 corridor will be impacted by construction noise in the overnight hours. TDOT will work with the contractor to keep residents informed regarding when they can expect heavy construction operations in their area.

There will be two I-440 community informational meetings for anyone who would like more details or has questions about the construction project.
