The Local Programs and Community Investments Division supports local governments in delivering transportation projects that enhance infrastructure, mobility, and overall community well-being. Through funding opportunities, technical assistance, and strategic partnerships, the division administers programs that improve roadway safety, expand active transportation options, enhance environmental sustainability, and secure federal grants that maximize investments in Tennessee’s communities.
The Local Programs Section assists local governments in administering state and federal aid projects, ensuring compliance with the Local Government Guidelines Manual. These projects include roadway resurfacing, greenways, signalization of intersections, and bridge replacements. By facilitating funding and project oversight, the office helps local communities enhance transportation networks and improve public infrastructure.
The State Aid and Bridge Grant Section provides financial support to county governments for improving roads on the State Aid system, a network of locally selected county roads requiring construction, planning, or paving. Bridge projects are funded through a combination of federal, state, and local sources, with Tennessee supplementing federal bridge funds to maintain a safe and reliable transportation network.
The Community Investments Section leads initiatives that preserve Tennessee’s scenic beauty, improve air quality, promote active transportation, and secure federal funding for community-driven transportation projects. Programs such as Adopt-A-Highway, Keep Tennessee Beautiful, and the TDOT Litter Grant engage communities in environmental stewardship. TDOT also works to reduce vehicle emissions, support cleaner transportation alternatives, and implement strategies aligned with the Clean Air Act and Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). Additionally, investments in sidewalks, bike paths, and greenways create safer, more connected communities while promoting healthier lifestyles. To further support Tennessee’s transportation goals, the section secures and manages state and federal grants, ensuring compliance with funding requirements and maximizing investments that benefit local communities.
