Interstate 40 and 81 Corridor Study

As identified in the Tennessee Long-Range Transportation Plan, the strategic highway system includes routes the state considers critical to statewide mobility and regional connectivity. The Transportation Plan classified routes needing improvement, while protecting and maximizing capacity over the next decade. Interstate 40 and Interstate 81 are a part of this system and classification.

TDOT is working with WSP USA Inc. to complete an 18-month study of the I-40/81 corridors, which will identify short- and long-term solutions for improving problem spots along each corridor. All study documents and reports will be available in the I-40/81 Corridor Study Library.

Overview

What is the study area?
The study area for the I-40/81 Multimodal Corridor Study stretches across the state of Tennessee and includes the entire lengths of I-40 and I-81, from state line to state line. The study includes more than 500 miles of interstate -- 456 miles along I-40 and 76 miles along I-81. The study area crosses 28 counties, each with cities that depend on these corridors for commerce, tourism, and daily commuting. . This study also included Watts Road and Campbell Station Road interchanges in Knoxville.

What is the purpose of the study?
The results of the study will provide a prioritized listing of potential multimodal projects that can be considered by TDOT or by local planning organizations.

When will the study be finished?
The study was completed in 2022.

What are some expected study outcomes?
The study will investigate a range of multimodal solutions to address future travel demands, with emphases on managing congestion, improving safety, maximizing the potential for freight diversion, and preserving/enhancing the corridor's economic benefits.

How can you help?

TDOT is dedicated to managing congestion and improving safety along the I-40 and I-81 corridors. Both technical analysis and public input are needed to provide as much data as possible for the study.

We encourage you to attend a public meeting, visit our interactive mapping tool, which allows you to provide feedback on segments and intersections/interchanges along the corridor that you use regularly, or take our survey via Survey Monkey at www.surveymonkey.com/r/F62R7DY. (Survey Monkey is now closed)

The project team will use the information you provide to help identify deficiencies along the route and guide the final recommendations for the study.
