NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security (TDOSHS) warns Tennesseans to exercise caution when searching online for driver services information. Tennesseans should be aware that deceptive, yet legal websites publish misleading information containing unofficial guidance on how to renew a driver license in order to scam customers into paying renewal fees.

“We advise all Tennesseans to be cautious of misleading websites offering to renew your driver license for a fee,” said Lori Bullard, Assistant Commissioner of Driver Services.  “These sites aim to be deceptive and confusing.  Always check our website, www.tn.gov/safety for guidance and information.”

These deceptive websites are not associated with the state and do not have authority to request money and/or personal information from customers.  The TDOSHS’s Driver Services Division is the only agency with authority to process driver license renewals in Tennessee.  The only way to renew a Tennessee driver license online is to visit TDOSHS’s website, https://www.tn.gov/safety/driver-services/online.html.  The driver must know their Tennessee driver license number, the last four digits of their social security number, and the last name as it appears on the driver license.

Other ways to renew a license are through self-service kiosks located in driver services centers and alternate sites across the state or by visiting one of the county clerk partnership locations.  The kiosk and county clerk locations can also be found on our website, www.tn.gov/safety.
