MURFREESBORO - The Special Investigations Section of the Tennessee Department of Revenue conducted the investigation that led to Charles William Redman, III’s guilty plea Wednesday. Redman, 39, is the former owner of A Plus Bail Bonding, in Murfreesboro.

Circuit Court Judge Royce Taylor accepted Redman’s guilty plea to five felony counts of tax evasion for filing false tax returns and four felony counts of aggravated perjury for submitting false reports to Rutherford County. Judge Taylor sentenced Redman to one year for each count of tax evasion and two years for each count of aggravated perjury. These sentences will run concurrently with Redman’s sentence for felony identity theft charges that Wilson County Circuit Court Judge Brody Kane imposed on January 5.

“The Department of Revenue is committed to applying Tennessee’s tax laws and policies uniformly to all taxpayers to ensure a level playing field,” Revenue Commissioner Richard Roberts said. “The Department cannot and will not allow people engaged in fraudulent tax activities to have a competitive advantage over honest business people.”

The Department pursued this criminal case in cooperation with District Attorney Jennings Jones’ office. Citizens who suspect violations of Tennessee's revenue laws should call the toll-free tax fraud hot line at (800) FRAUDTX (372-8389).

The Department collects about 87 percent of total state revenue. During the 2015 fiscal year, it collected $12.6 billion in state taxes and fees and more than $2.4 billion in taxes and fees for local governments.
