NASHVILLE - April 15 isn’t just the deadline for the filing and payment of federal individual income tax. For some taxpayers, it’s also the due date for the filing and payment of certain state taxes.

In Tennessee, April 15 is the due date for business tax and franchise and excise tax for companies that report on a calendar year basis. In addition, taxpayers subject to the Hall income tax must file and pay that tax by April 15. More information about these taxes may be found on the Department of Revenue’s website, www.tn.gov/revenue.

The Department’s website offers a convenient and secure way for taxpayers to file and pay these taxes online. Taxpayers should visit the “online services” section of the Department’s website to file and pay these taxes and to learn more information.

“We are pleased to be able to provide electronic filing and payment options, as well as other electronic tools for assistance, to Tennessee’s taxpayers,” Revenue Commissioner Richard Roberts said. “Electronically filing tax returns and payments saves valuable time for tax preparers and Department of Revenue staff.  These efficiencies translate into savings for Tennessee’s taxpayers.”

The Department of Revenue is happy to assist taxpayers with questions. Online assistance is available on the Department’s website, www.tn.gov/revenue , through the Revenue Help application. This online application is designed to help taxpayers search and find answers to their questions through informational articles. Taxpayers may also submit questions to the Department through the application, instead of waiting on the telephone for assistance. From April 6 through April 16, The Department will have extended call center hours from 7:00 am to 5:30 pm, Central time, during the business week.  Taxpayers may call 615-253-0600 (Nashville and outside Tennessee) or toll-free at (800) 342-1003.

The Department of Revenue is responsible for the administration of state tax laws and motor vehicle title and registration laws, as well as the collection of taxes and fees associated with those laws. The Department collects about 87 percent of total state revenue. During the 2014 fiscal year, it collected $11.8 billion in state taxes and fees and more than $2.3 billion in taxes and fees for local governments.
