Command Sergeant Major James D. Crockett was assigned to serve as Tennessee’s ninth State Command Sergeant Major on 31 January 2021. He represents the Land Component Commander, and advises on matters pertaining to policies and actions that affect enlisted Soldiers.
CSM Dale Crockett is from Crossville, TN. He joined the military in June 1990 as a 19D Cavalry Scout and attended basic reconnaissance training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He advanced through the ranks and was promoted to Sergeant First Class in 2001 while assigned to Det. 1 Troop C 1/278 ACR. He served as Scout platoon sergeant and Detachment NCOIC for the next three years. During this time his Bradley Crew was recognized as Regimental Top Gun in 2003. In 2004 his unit was reorganized, and he was assigned as Platoon Sergeant in the Regimental Recon Troop. In 2006 he was promoted to First Sergeant for Gunslinger Troop 2/278 ACR and would later go on to be promoted to the Command Sergeant Major of 2/278 ACR in March 2012. In April of 2017 he was selected as the eleventh Command Sergeant Major of the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment, and would go on to be the Tennessee Command Sergeant Major
His military education includes Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Course, Advanced Non-Commissioned Officer Course, Bradley Commanders Crew Evaluators Course, First Sergeant Course, Sniper School, Airborne Course, Designated Marksman Course, M1 Tank Commander Certification Course, Brigade Pre-Command Course, United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, and Nominative Leaders Course.
His deployments include Operation Iraqi Freedom (2004-2005 and 2009-2010) and Operation Tiger, Gustav Hurricane Relief in Baton Rouge, Louisiana (2008), Operation Atlantic Resolve, Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine (2018-2019).
CSM Crockett’s military decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Service Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal with M device and Silver Hour Glass, Noncommissioned Officer Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Ribbon, Tennessee Distinguished Service Medal, Combat Action Badge, Parachutist Badge, and Bronze Medallion of the Order of Saint George.
CSM Crockett is the son of Dale Crockett and Charlotte Jones of Crossville, Tennessee. He has been married to Sharon Crockett for 30 years, and they have a son Connor (22) and daughter Sara (17).
