Colonel Warner A. Ross II assumed command of the 194th Engineer Brigade on 4 March 2017. He enlisted into military service as a Private First Class in 1990 with Company C 4TH BN 117TH IN. He attended One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Benning, GA, where he trained as an 11B Infantryman. Following Basic Training/Infantry School graduation, he was assigned to Company C 4TH BN 117TH IN as a rifleman. He attended OCS at the 117th Regional Training Institute, Tennessee Army National Guard and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry on 22 June 1991.
Over the past 26 years, COL Ross has served in leadership positions from platoon leader, battery executive officer, battery commander, squadron commander and key staff positions at Battalion/Squadron, Brigade/Regimental and State Joint Force levels. His assignments have included Infantry, Field Artillery and Armored Cavalry units with the 4-117th IN, 2-115th FA, 1-181st FA, 196th FA, 278th ACR and 1/278th ACR. COL Ross served with the 278TH Armored Cavalry Regiment during OIF III. During the deployment, he was assigned as 278th Regimental Fire Support Officer at Forward Operating Base Caldwell, Iraq. He completed his second deployment with the 1/278th to Iraq in 2010 where he was stationed in Northern Iraq at Forward Operating Base Qayyarah-West. Prior to and throughout the second deployment, COL Ross has served as Squadron Operations Officer, as Squadron Executive Officer and later as Squadron Commander for 1/278th ACR. The Squadron has six separate Troop formations with 800+ soldiers.
COL Ross’s professional military education includes Infantry Officer Basic Course, Infantry/Artillery Officer Advanced Courses, Combined Arms Staff Service School, Intermediate Level Education, and Maneuver Pre-Command Course. In 2015, COL Ross was selected to attend Army War College and is currently a 2nd year Strategic Studies student at the War College in Carlisle Barracks, PA. Prior to taking command of the 194th, COL Ross served as G3-Operations Officer at Joint Force Headquarters, Nashville, TN.
COL Ross (Nubbin) earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Mississippi and dual Masters of Education Curriculum and Administrative Supervision degrees from Freed-Hardeman University. While at Ole Miss, he was a member of the varsity football team earning three varsity letters. He has been a classroom instructor, coach, vice-principal and was selected as Tennessee’s Principal of the Year for 2008. He is currently serving as the Director of Schools for Hardeman County School District.
Military awards/decorations include: Bronze Star Medal (2 Awards), Meritorious Service Medal (4 awards), Army Commendation Medal (3 Awards) and Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2 Awards), Iraq Campaign Medal w/2 Stars, Order of St. Barbara (Field Artillery), Order of St. Maurice (Infantry-Legionnaire) and 278th Combat Spurs.
COL Ross and his wife Becky currently reside on their family farm in Toone, Tennessee with one of their three sons – Mark-14 years old. Mason Ross is a senior at Mississippi State University and also serves as a 19D Cavalry Scout assigned to 1/278th ACR. The oldest son-Mitch graduated from Harvard University in 2013 and works as an investment bond analyst.
