Colonel Trent Scates is currently serving as the Commander of the 194h Engineer Brigade in Jackson, TN. COL Scates was appointed to his current position in November 2020.
Scates enlisted in the Tennessee Army National Guard January 8, 1990, serving as a Heavy Equipment Operator in the 913th Engineer Company. Following completion of Officer Candidate School at the Tennessee Military Academy, he was commissioned an Engineer officer June 19, 1993.

Col. Scates earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences from University of Tennessee at Martin in Martin, Tennessee in 1992, a Bachelor’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, TN in 1999, Master of Science in Rural Primary Care from Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, WV in 2002, and a Master’s of Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College in July 2018. He is also a graduate of the US Army War College, Intermediate Level Education, CAS3, the Ordnance Officer Advance Course, APG, MD, and the Engineer Officer Basic, Fort Leonard Wood, MO.

Scates’ civilian employment is Program Director for the Physician Assistant Program at Bethel University, McKenzie, TN and works as a Physician Assistant-Certified in Family Practice/Internal Medicine at Dresden Medical Clinic in Dresden, TN. He is married to Beth Wright Scates, and has three children, McCall (24), Matt (16), and Phillip (11).
