About The Ducktown Basin Museum-Burra Burra Mine State Historic Site

The Ducktown Basin Museum is located on the Burra Burra Mine site, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The site consists of 10 buildings on 17 acres and was the headquarters for Tennessee Copper Company's mine operations from 1899 to 1975. The museum's mission is to preserve and interpret the cultural and industrial heritage of this copper-mining region of southern Appalachia. This is accomplished using a DVD presentation that provides an overview, along with artifacts, photographs and displays. Major themes examined include the technology and methods of mining, smelting and the associated chemical industry; the impact on the environment and subsequent reclamation efforts; and the social life in company towns. Tours of the grounds are available by appointment. The State of Tennessee purchased the property in 1988, and the site is administered by the Ducktown Basin Museum.
