NASHVILLE, TN - Tennessee revenues exceeded budgeted estimates for the month of August. Department of Finance and Administration Commissioner Jim Bryson today reported that total August tax revenues were $1.7 billion, $54.6 million more than the budgeted estimate and $88.1 million more than August 2025. The total tax growth rate for the month was 5.48 percent.

General fund revenues were $45.2 million more than the August estimate, while the four other funds that share in state tax revenues were $9.4 million more than the estimates.

On an accrual basis, August is the first month in the 2026-2027 fiscal year.

“August tax collections surpassed our budgeted expectations for the month,” Bryson said. “Sales tax revenues, which reflect July’s taxable sales activity, exceeded expectations and continued to show steady growth. Corporate tax revenues, reflected in franchise and excise tax collections, also performed well. While fuel tax revenues fell below expectations, all other tax categories combined met expectations and showed favorable growth.

"We are encouraged by the start of the new fiscal year and remain cautiously optimistic about continued growth. We will closely monitor economic activity to ensure that our monthly budget estimates are met.”

Individual tax performance compared to August 2026 Budgeted Estimates:

  • Sales Taxes: Above estimate by 2.73% or $35.5 million
