Maury Co. Woman Charged with TennCare Doctor Shopping

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A Maury County woman is charged with TennCare fraud involving doctor shopping, or using TennCare to go to multiple doctors in a short time period to obtain controlled substances.

The Office of Inspector General (OIG), with the assistance of the Maury County Sheriff’s Office, today announced the arrest of Angela M. Brown, 35, of Spring Hill.  She is charged with fraudulently using TennCare to obtain controlled substances by doctor shopping. 

“Doctor shopping for drugs is not tolerated in the TennCare program, and we are pursuing these cases across the state where people are using TennCare to obtain prescription drugs for resale or abuse,” Inspector General Manny Tyndall said. “We’re committed to ensuring that TennCare benefits are used to address legitimate health issues by people who truly need services.”

TennCare fraud is a Class E felony carrying a sentence of up to two years in prison. District Attorney General Brent Cooper is prosecuting.

The OIG, which is separate from TennCare, began full operation in February 2005 and has investigated cases leading to over $3 million being repaid to TennCare, with a total estimated cost avoidance of over $163.6 million for TennCare, according to latest figures. To date, more than 2,312 people have been charged with TennCare fraud.
