McMinn Co. Woman Apprehended After 2014 Indictment for TennCare Fraud

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A McMinn County woman has been arrested months after her indictment on charges of TennCare doctor shopping.

The Office of Inspector General (OIG), assisted by the McMinn County Sheriff’s Office, today announced the arrest of Erica Lacy Thurman, 27, of Athens.  She was indicted in November of last year with going to multiple doctors in a short period of time to obtain drugs.  She is also charged with obtaining a controlled substance by fraud.

For four months, Thurman was on the OIG’s most wanted list for fugitives who are wanted on TennCare fraud charges.

“Prescription drug abuse is a problem the state is attacking from all fronts – doctors, pharmacists, law enforcement and citizens,” Inspector General Manny Tyndall said. “We’re committed to ensuring that TennCare benefits are used for legitimate healthcare concerns.”

TennCare fraud is a Class E felony, carrying a sentence of up to two years in prison per charge. District Attorney General Stephen Crump will be prosecuting.

The OIG, which is separate from TennCare, began full operation in February 2005 and has investigated cases leading to over $3 million being repaid to TennCare, with a total estimated cost avoidance of over $163.6 million for TennCare, according to latest figures. To date, more than 2,304 people have been charged with TennCare fraud.
