Patient Preparation

Specimen Collection |
- Acceptable Specimen Sources/Type(s) for Submission
- Pure bacterial or fungal isolates
- Extracted nucleic acid from bacterial, viral, parasite or fungus.

Specimen Labeling |
- Specimen must be labeled with at least two unique patient identifiers and match accompanying Lab Web Portal order.

Specimen Processing |

Specimen Storage and Preservation |
- Specimens should be stored between 2 - 8°C and for no longer than 2 days after collection.
- If specimens cannot be transported within 2 days of collection, they should be frozen at (-70)°C or colder.

Specimen Transport |
- Specimens must be transported on cold packs pack and maintained at 2 - 8°C.
- Frozen specimens should be sent on Dry Ice.
- All infectious substance shipments must conform to U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR 49 C.F.R. Parts 171-180).

Specimen Acceptability and Rejection |
Unsatisfactory specimens include, but may not be limited to:
- The specimen was broken or leaked in transit
- No specimen was in the container submitted
- Improper specimen type submitted
- Specimens received at improper temperature
- Specimens received without documentation of consultation.
- Isolate submission was not a fresh, pure isolate.
