Should I get an updated COVID-19 vaccine?
Yes, these vaccines protect against the COVID-19 variants currently circulating during the 2023-2024 respiratory virus season. Everyone 6 months and older should get a COVID-19 vaccine regardless of whether they’ve received any original COVID-19 vaccine(s). COVID-19 vaccines can help protect against severe illness, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19.  The virus also changes over time and after the initial vaccine series, your immunity naturally decreases over time so you may lose some of that protection. Therefore, it is recommended to get an updated vaccine to increase your protection even if you received COVID-19 vaccines in the past.

What age groups are eligible for the new COVID-19 vaccine?
Everyone aged 6 months and older should get 1 updated COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer, Moderna or Novavax) to be up to date. Children ages 6-months to 4 years who have never received a COVID-19 vaccine before should get a 2-3 dose initial series.

COVID-19 vaccine recommendations may be updated as scientists continue monitor the latest COVID-19 data.

When should I get my updated vaccine?
Two months (8 weeks) after your last COVID-19 vaccine or if you have received no COVID-19 vaccines in the past, as soon as possible.

Are COVID-19 vaccines safe?
Yes, the COVID-19 vaccine is safe and your best protection against the virus. It has been given to over 270 million people in the US alone. It is effective in reducing your risk of severe disease, hospitalization, and death. Vaccination remains the best defense to protect yourself and those around you.

Can I mix and match my updated COVID-19 vaccine doses?
Yes. Adult individuals may choose which vaccine they receive (Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna or Novavax). If you prefer a vaccine type check https://www.vaccines.gov/ to find a location that is offering your preferred COVID-19 vaccine. Children ages 6 months–4 years who are unvaccinated are recommended to receive 2 or 3 updated vaccine doses from the vaccine manufacturer.

Should I get an updated COVID-19 vaccine after I have recovered from COVID-19?
Yes. Getting a COVID-19 vaccine after you have recovered from COVID-19 infection provides added protection. You may consider waiting up to 90 days after you recover from COVID-19 before getting your updated booster if you want. The infection could give you some protection, but it won’t last very long. If you’re not sure, you should talk with your doctor.

Do I need an appointment to get my updated COVID-19 vaccine?
