Sign Policy, Design, and Programs Section

We manage statewide sign programs and support the State Traffic Engineer with traffic sign responsibilities.

We ensure that signs follow applicable policies, rules, and regulations on public roads throughout Tennessee.

The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) is the national standard for traffic control devices.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) approves this standard for roads open to public travel.

Tennessee uses the 11th Edition of the MUTCD for statewide traffic control device guidance.

This section designs signs and reviews and approves sign plans from other TDOT offices.

What We Do

• Oversee statewide sign programs and compliance with policies, rules, and regulations.
  
• Apply the MUTCD (11th Edition) as the standard for traffic control devices.
  
• Design signs and review/approve sign plans produced by TDOT offices.
