Freight planning is a core component of both state and metropolitan transportation planning. Due to its central location and extensive multimodal network, Tennessee’s freight infrastructure plays a vital role in supporting national and regional trade flows.

The TDOT Freight Planning Office works closely with transportation agencies, Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), public/private partners to coordinate and advance statewide freight planning efforts.  TDOT supports MPOs upon request by providing freight data resources, including tools such as Transearch, and by assisting with targeted freight studies and smaller freight-related projects.

In 2013, TDOT established a statewide Freight Advisory Committee (FAC) to bring together industry stakeholders and public partners to help guide freight policy and support the development and ongoing implementation of Tennessee’s State Freight Plan.
