Third Closure Confirmed for I-40 Project in Downtown Nashville

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Department of Transportation contract crews will temporarily close a one-mile stretch of Interstate 40 along the south loop of downtown Nashville for bridge repairs. The closure is scheduled as follows.

• Friday, August 10 at 8:00 p.m. through Monday, August 13 at 6:00 a.m.

   

  I-40 will be CLOSED from the I-40/I-24 split near the Silliman Evans Bridge to the I-40/I-65 split near the Adventure Science Center, south of downtown. 2^nd Avenue will be closed underneath I-40.

   

  Lafayette Street will remain open during the interstate closure. While 4^th Avenue will be closed most of the weekend, officers with the Metro Police Department will be working with TDOT to temporarily open 4^th Avenue and the I-40 ramps late Saturday evening to help accommodate post-concert traffic from Nissan Stadium. From approximately 10 p.m. - 2 a.m., drivers will be able to use 4^th Avenue in the bridge area and access I-40 eastbound and westbound from the 4^th Avenue ramps. Work will still be underway on the bridge deck, so the interstate will remain closed to traffic.

   

  2^nd Avenue will be closed under the bridge throughout the interstate closure.

   

  During the closure, all traffic will be detoured to allow crews to repair the I-40 bridge decks. The closures are necessary to allow workers, equipment, and materials to access the bridge site. Work will continue around-the-clock in order to have the bridge ready for traffic by Monday morning rush hour.

   

  What Drivers Need to Know

  Plan Ahead – Know your alternate route before you leave for your destination.

  Allow Extra Travel Time – Expect congestion in the downtown area, including interstates and local roads.

  Avoid the Area – Seek a route away from downtown if your destination is not in the downtown area.

Message boards will alert motorists to the closures and alternate routes. Detours are also available online.

This is the third of three weekend closures scheduled for this section of I-40 as part of a $5.8 million resurfacing and bridge repair project that extends from Church Street to Arlington Avenue. All closures are dependent on weather and project progress and are subject to change.
