NASHVILLE – Tennessee Department of Transportation contract crews will temporarily close a one-mile stretch of Interstate 40 along the south loop of downtown Nashville for bridge repairs. The closure is scheduled as follows.

  • Friday, July 27 at 8:00 p.m. through Monday, July 30 at 6 a.m.

I-40 will be CLOSED from the I-40/I-24 split near the Silliman Evans Bridge to the I-40/I-65 split near the Adventure Science Center, south of downtown. Additionally, 2nd Avenue, 4th Avenue, and Lafayette Street will be CLOSED underneath I-40.

During the closure, all traffic will be detoured to allow crews to repair the I-40 bridge decks. The closures are necessary to allow workers, equipment, and materials to access the bridge site. Work will continue around-the-clock in order to have the bridge ready for traffic by Monday morning rush hour.

What Drivers Need to Know
Plan Ahead – Know your alternate route before you leave for your destination.
Allow Extra Travel Time – Expect congestion in the downtown area, including interstates and local roads.
Avoid the Area – Seek a route away from downtown if your destination is not in the downtown area.

Downtown/Interstate Access:
Access to on- or off-ramps at 2nd or 4th Avenues will be closed.
Through traffic on 2nd Avenue, 4th Avenue, and Lafayette Street will be diverted around the closure.

Message boards will alert motorists to the closures and alternate routes. Detours are also available online.

This is the first of three weekend closures scheduled for this section of I-40 as part of a $5.8 million resurfacing and bridge repair project that extends from Church Street to Arlington Avenue. All closures are dependent on weather and project progress and are subject to change.
