Deputy Governor Henry Announces Transportation Grant for City of Parkers Crossroads

Grant to Fund Phase 4 of Parkers Crossroads Trail

Parkers Crossroads, Tenn. - Tennessee Deputy Governor Jim Henry and Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner John Schroer announced Thursday the award of a $486,982 transportation alternative grant to the city of Parkers Crossroads for Phase 4 of the Parkers Crossroads Trail Project.

This project includes construction of an asphalt path that will link the Parkers Crossroads trail system to the new Veterans Cemetery. Two restroom facilities and a parking area will also be added. Benches and shade structures will enhance the overall trail experience for visitors. Signs will be added to inform visitors of trail lengths as well as directions to various historical markers. Interpretive signs will bring the story of the Battle of Parkers Crossroads to life, adding to the user’s experience.

“Parkers Crossroads is a heavily visited historical area, and these improvements have a positive impact on the lives of its residents and visitors,” Deputy Gov. Henry said. “This investment will allow the city to add to its trail system while also providing a boost to the local economy. I’m pleased the state can assist with this effort.”

The transportation alternative grant is made possible through a federally funded program formerly known as transportation enhancement, and is administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

“Through these grants, TDOT has funded more than $345 million in non-traditional transportation projects,” said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer.  “This program has assisted communities all over the state in their efforts to revitalize downtowns, highlight historic areas, provide alternative means of transportation, and increase opportunities for economic development.”

A variety of activities, such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects, are eligible for grant funds under the federal program.

Sen. Dolores Gresham (R-Somerville) and Rep. Steve McDaniel (R-Parkers Crossroads), represent Henderson County in the Tennessee General Assembly.
