Meet Mohammed Abdelrahman, Transportation Engineering Specialist 3, Region 3 – Construction

Among them is Mohammed Abdelrahman, P.E., Transportation Engineering Specialist 3, whose commitment to learning, teamwork, and community impact has quickly made him a valued member of the department.
Mohammed joined TDOT in February 2026, drawn to the department’s reputation for technical excellence, strong public mission, and commitment to employee development. From his first days on the job, Mohammed says he found himself in a supportive environment where people share knowledge and encourage professional growth.

I have had the opportunity to work on meaningful transportation projects that directly benefit the public while collaborating with knowledgeable and supportive professionals. I especially enjoy being involved in field operations, solving engineering challenges, and learning from experienced team members.”

Originally from Sudan in North Africa, Mohammed brings a unique perspective shaped by his love of problem-solving, mathematics, and building things that improve people’s lives. Civil engineering became a natural pathway, pairing technical knowledge with practical solutions that benefit communities.
His supervisor, Osama Mohamed, District 37 Construction Team Lead, noticed Mohammed’s strong engagement and adaptability early on. “Mohammed has been doing a good job stepping into his position and understanding the expectations of his role,” Osama said. “He has been managing multiple projects while also working toward the required certifications and studying for his P.E. exam.”
Mohammed has made important contributions during his first months with the department. He successfully delivered several resurfacing projects on time and on budget, demonstrating both his technical expertise and his commitment to serving the public. His supervisor also highlighted his involvement in pre-construction meetings, ongoing project discussions, and drafting change orders. “Those contributions show his initiative and readiness to take on increasing responsibilities,” Osama said.
As he grew into his role, Mohammed felt encouraged to revisit a professional goal he had started earlier in his career: earning his Professional Engineer (P.E.) license. After months of disciplined studying while managing multiple construction projects, Mohammed recently passed the P.E. exam.
“Passing the P.E. exam is one of the most meaningful milestones in my career,” Mohammed said. “It represents months of dedication, hard work, and perseverance. It also reinforces my commitment to serving the public by making sound engineering decisions and continuing to grow professionally.”
For the everyday Tennessean, the significance of a P.E. license may not always be obvious, but its impact is felt every day on the roads they travel. Licensed engineers follow strict ethical, safety, and technical standards, ensuring that projects are designed and delivered with public protection in mind. When a TDOT engineer earns a P.E., it means the work they contribute to meets rigorous professional requirements, helping to keep Tennessee’s roads safe, durable, and reliable for millions of drivers.
“Earning a P.E. license adds significant value to any engineer in both daily work and long-term growth,” Osama said. “For Mohammed, it will support him in making well-rounded decisions that take into account compliance, safety, technical feasibility, and ethics”
Moving forward, Mohammed hopes to continue advancing technically and as a leader. He wants to take on more complex projects, contribute to innovative solutions, mentor future engineers, and keep serving Tennesseans through reliable, forward-thinking infrastructure. He is grateful for the support he has received and hopes his story encourages others to pursue their own professional goals.
“I look forward to continuing to learn, contribute, and help deliver transportation projects that make a lasting difference for the public,” he said. “I also hope my experience encourages others to pursue their professional goals and never stop learning.”
