Scam Alert

The Tennessee Board of Pharmacy has been made aware that some licensees have received fraudulent communications from individuals claiming to be from the Board of Pharmacy, or another agency, such as the DEA. The communications, often by phone, and even by letter may threaten arrest or license suspension, demand personal information, or require the payment of fines. Please note: 

  •   Phone calls may “spoof” appear to be from our number;
  •   If you need to verify the identity of a TN Board of Pharmacy investigator, call 615-253-1299 or email pharmacy.health@tn.gov
  •  The Tennessee Board of Pharmacy will never demand that you provide personally identifying information, such as social security number, date of birth, bank or credit card account numbers over the phone;
  •   These type of licensing scams are a problem nationwide.

 If you believe you are the recipient of a fraudulent communication claiming to be from the Tennessee Board of Pharmacy:

  • Notify TN Board of Pharmacy at 615-253-1299, or email pharmacy.health@tn.gov
  • Report the communication to local law enforcement;
  • The Federal Trade Commission also accepts reports about “Imposter Scams” online or at 1-877-382-4357. These reports are used to aid ongoing investigations.

The Drug Enforcement Administration also has warned of imposters posing as DEA agents. Information and reporting of these scams can be found at this DEA website

E-Prescribing Waiver Information and Application

T.C.A. 63-1-160  requires that on or after January 1, 2021, any prescription for a Schedule II, III, IV or V controlled substance issued by a prescriber who is authorized by law to prescribe the drug must be issued as an electronic prescription from the person issuing the prescription to a pharmacy.

A health care prescriber that is unable to comply with the electronic prescription requirement for a Schedule II, III, IV or V prior to January 1, 2021, may apply for a waiver from the requirement based on economic hardship or technological limitations that are not reasonably within the control of the health care prescriber or other exceptional circumstance demonstrated by the health care prescriber.

The granting of this application provides a waiver from the electronic prescription requirement and is effective from January 1, 2024 until December 31, 2024. There is no fee for this application. Health care prescribers will be notified via the email address provided by the health care prescriber of the Commissioner’s approval or denial of the waiver request.
