Letter to The Editor
Many of the questions we receive via email at the Council touch on issues that affect many others in our community. We will occasionally share these questions anonymously as “letters to the editor,” removing all identifying details. This allows us to address common concerns and provide helpful information to a wider audience, while respecting the privacy of those who reach out to us.Dear Council on Developmental Disabilities,
I am the parent of a high school freshman with disabilities, and we're facing some important decisions about the future. We're trying to determine which
diploma pathway would be the best fit for my son. He has expressed that he doesn't want to stay in school past the typical graduation age and strongly
prefers learning alongside his peers in general education classes.
I want to honor his wishes while making sure we choose the path that will best prepare him for adulthood. Could you provide guidance about the different
diploma options available for students with disabilities in Tennessee? What should families consider when making this decision?
- Concerned Parent
Dear Concerned Parent,
Thank you for reaching out about high school pathway options. This is a complex and important decision that many families face. While each student's situation is unique, there are several excellent resources available to help guide your decision-making process:
First, we recommend reviewing two comprehensive guides:
- The Tennessee Department of Education's diploma decision guide
- The Transition Tennessee diploma guide
For additional support, you can:
- Connect with the Department of Education's diploma and assessment pathways team
- Explore Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) and other employment training opportunities available during high school
Remember that your school's IEP team should be actively involved in this discussion, helping to align your child's educational pathway with their goals and preferences.
Wishing you all the best,
- The Council Team
