What is an RSA?

A Road Safety Audit (RSA) is a safety review of a road or intersection.

A team with different skills studies the site and the crash data.

The goal is to make the road safer for everyone—drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit riders.

Why do we do RSAs?

RSAs help find safety problems seen in crash records and field checks.

The team suggests changes to remove or reduce those risks.

System-wide Safety Improvements

The Project Safety Office also makes safety upgrades at many sites that share the same issues, such as similar crash patterns or road designs. These upgrades include:

• Ramp Queue Projects:  Reduce backups on ramps and improve flow and safety.

• Road Safety Audits (RSAs):  Formal reviews that recommend fixes to cut crashes.

• High Friction Surface Treatments:  Add gritty pavement to help cars stop faster and prevent skids.

• Roadway Median Cable Barrier:  Install cables in the median to stop cross over crashes.

• Spot Safety Program:  Make quick fixes at specific high risk locations.
