Hamilton Avenue Bridge over I-65 to Remain Closed Until Full Repair

Nashville, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has closed the Hamilton Avenue bridge over Interstate 65 in Davidson County.

On Wednesday, September 9, a TDOT HELP operator discovered damage to the Hamilton Avenue bridge deck. TDOT’s bridge inspection team evaluated the damage, which is a 17-foot by 24-foot deteriorated deck area. For the safety of traffic on Hamilton Avenue and I-65 below, TDOT has closed the bridge to vehicle traffic until a full deck repair can be made.

TDOT is expediting the design and contractor procurement for this project; however, due to the necessary steps involved, construction is not expected to begin until later this month or early next month. Until then, the north sidewalk will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists. Completion of the full deck repair is anticipated by the end of this year. Motorists can cross I-65 using Chestnut Street or Wedgewood Avenue.

The Hamilton Street bridge over I-65 was built in 1970 and last inspected in January of this year. No critical issues were found.

All work is weather-dependent. As always, drivers are reminded to allow additional time, slow down, and move over when traveling through a work zone. The Move Over Law was passed in 2006. The penalty for violating the law in Tennessee includes the possibility of up to 30 days in jail and a maximum fine of $500.
