Repair Work to Close Smith County Welcome Center

Nashville, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT)  will conduct a full closure of the Interstate 40 Welcome Center in Smith County.

Beginning Monday, July 27, crews will conduct a full closure of the Smith County Welcome Center at mile marker 267. These closures are necessary for sewer line repair operations.  This closure, necessary for sewer line repair operations, is anticipated to last three weeks, with the reopening tentatively scheduled for Monday, August 17.

Signage will be in place, alerting motorists in advance of the Welcome Center.

The next available Interstate 40 eastbound rest area is located in Cumberland County at mile marker 324.4. The nearest westbound rest area is located in Benton County at mile marker 130.

All work is weather-dependent. As always, drivers are reminded to allow additional time, slow down, and move over when traveling through a work zone. The Move Over Law was passed in 2006. The penalty for violating the law in Tennessee includes the possibility of up to 30 days in jail and a maximum fine of $500.
