Work Begins on Final Phase of Wilson County Spot Safety Project

Nashville, Tenn. - The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) will begin preliminary work on the final phase of a spot safety project on State Route 109 in Wilson County.

Starting Monday, July 13, through Friday, July 17, TDOT crews will conduct intermittent southbound lane and shoulder closures on Highway 109 (SR 109) from north of Hickory Ridge Road to E. Division Street from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Adjacent properties and property access points should expect minimal impact. Still, drivers may need to use alternate access points to properties during this time.

These closures are necessary for preliminary work related to a spot safety project that will add a southbound lane from just north of Hickory Ridge Road to E. Division Street. Following this initial preliminary work, contractors will return in the coming months to complete the entire project and open the lane to motorists.

Additionally, TDOT crews will be building out the median on Highway 109 south of Eastgate Boulevard. The northbound far left turn lane to Eastgate Boulevard will be closed to complete this work.

The goals of both projects are to increase safety, reduce conflict points, and address traffic flow on SR 109 near the I-40 interchange. These improvements follow spot safety work completed this spring on SR 109 in collaboration with the City of Lebanon, including an additional northbound lane from the I-40 interchange to Hickory Ridge Road.

Thanks to additional funding approved by the 113^th General Assembly, TDOT can invest more than $20 million in fiscal year 2026 for spot safety improvements. These smaller-scale projects target high-risk areas to reduce collisions and improve traffic flow. To date in Region 3, TDOT crews have completed 15 spot safety projects in seven counties this fiscal year.

All work is weather-dependent. As always, drivers are reminded to allow additional time, slow down, and move over when traveling through a work zone. The Move Over Law was passed in 2006. The penalty for violating the law in Tennessee includes the possibility of up to 30 days in jail and a maximum fine of $500.
