Nashville, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) will conduct lane and ramp closures on Interstate 24 in Rutherford County next week.

The following overnight closures will take place:

·         Sunday, September 21, and Monday, September 22, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

o    Outside right lane on I-24 westbound at Exit 81(US 231/Murfreesboro/Shelbyville)

o    I-24 westbound off-ramp at Exit 81 (US 231/Murfreesboro/Shelbyville)

·         Wednesday, September 24, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

o    Temporary lane and full ramp closures on the I-24 off-ramps at Exit 76 (Fortress Blvd/Medical Center Pkway) in both directions

The closures are necessary for traffic switches and moving the barrier wall at both interchanges as part of two separate improvement projects. Improvements to the westbound off-ramp at Exit 81 include lengthening the deceleration lane and creating a wider ramp. Work on this interchange project is scheduled to be completed by October 2025. The safety project at Exit 76, expected to be complete by October 2026, includes grading and paving work.

All work is weather-dependent. As always, drivers are reminded to allow additional time, slow down, and move over when traveling through a work zone. The Move Over Law was passed in 2006. The penalty for violating the law in Tennessee carries the possibility of up to 30 days in jail and a maximum fine of up to $500.

Motorists can alert TDOT to potholes by calling the TDOTFIX Hotline at 833-TDOTFIX or using this online form: TDOT Maintenance Request. The TDOT SmartWay Map (https://smartway.tn.gov) provides the latest construction activity traffic updates. Travelers can also call 511 for travel information.
