DeKalb County Health Adventure

Children and adults wearing protective gear practice martial arts drills with instructors on padded mats inside a gym.

In 2017, DeKalb County leadership created the DeKalb Health Adventure program, offering free fitness classes to county residents. The county’s chamber of commerce and mayor’s office obtained a Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (TNECD) ThreeStar grant in 2018 to continue the program, add new classes, and ramp up special needs programming. Over 30 classes on yoga, martial arts, senior chair volleyball, nutrition, healthy cooking, and more have been offered, and the program served 724 adults and 1,469 students in its first two years.
