Brushy Mountain Development RV Park Pad

Rows of vintage license plates from different states are mounted on trees along a wooded path.

The Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary opened its doors in 1896 and housed some of America’s most notorious criminals. After it was decommissioned in 2009, the Brushy Mountain Group transformed the site into a popular tourist destination, fit with a museum, theater, restaurant, distillery, gift shop, and event venue. Despite Brushy Mountain’s success, Morgan County offers very limited overnight accommodations.

To maximize the site’s potential, the county development board and Brushy Mountain Group are using Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) grant funds to create an access road, concrete pads, and utilities for a new RV park. This project will draw more overnight stays from visitors, increasing tourism and economic impact for Morgan County.
