About this event
Join us for the second installment of our Hearth & Timber: Experiences of the Past series at Marble Springs State Historic Site! This month, we’re exploring hygiene and self-care in the 18th century—from frontier practicality to fashionable beauty routines.
This program includes a guided talk on how early Americans understood health and cleanliness, including the science, traditions, and cultural expectations that shaped daily life.
After the lecture, participants will try their hand at crafting historical DIY items such as lavender water, tooth powder, and other cosmetic or hygiene-inspired concoctions based on 18th-century practices.
Audience Advisory: This program includes historical discussion of the human body, hygiene, and bodily functions as they were understood in the 18th century. While content will be presented in a respectful and educational manner, some topics may not be suitable for all audiences. This program is recommended for ages 12 and up; parental discretion is advised.
