Tennessee Programs

The State of Tennessee offers a variety of programs and services that address issues related to Positive and Adverse Childhood Experiences. These programs focus on promoting safe, stable, and nurturing relationships and environments while protecting against trauma and adversity for children. 

Tennessee Department of Health - Family Health and Wellness

Early childhood programs support healthy development during the critical early years of brain development, establishing strong foundations through PCEs.

  • Evidence Based Home Visiting can be an effective early-intervention strategy to improve the health and well-being of children and parents. Visit the EBHV Page Here. 
  • Community Health Access and Navigation in Tennessee (CHANT) provides care coordination through local health departments. Eligible individuals are connected to resources and support for their health and medical needs, such as reimbursement or assistance with co-pays. Visit the CHANT page here. 
  • Women, Infants, and Children Program(WIC) provides access to nutrition assistance, nutrition education, breastfeeding education and support, and health care referrals for mothers of young children. Visit the WIC Page here.  
  • Breastfeeding Services offered by TDH provide resources and support to new mothers regarding breastfeeding, which can help develop a nurturing relationship between mother and baby. 
  • Newborn Screening is a program that screens infants to detect treatable health conditions. Visit the Newborn Screening page here.

Family Health and Wellness coordinates various projects to implement evidence-based injury and violence prevention programs, which can prevent against ACEs.  

  • The Child Fatality Review brings together a team of professionals to make thorough investigations on matters of child death. This team collects information regarding every case to strengthen preventative systems in the future, including preventing ACEs-related deaths. Visit the Child Fatality Review Webpage here. 
  • Rape prevention and education implements programs to prevent sexual violence perpetration and victimization, which is an ACE. Visit the Rape Prevention Webpage Here. 
  • Suicide Prevention programs offer resources and support for all Tennesseans to prevent suicide and support mental health initiatives. 
  • Overdose Prevention focuses efforts to increase education and awareness of prescription drug abuse, which is associated with ACEs.  
  • The Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Program (TUPCP) coordinates programs to prevent tobacco use across Tennessee. High ACEs scores are associated with tobacco use, making tobacco prevention an ACEs-related strategy. TUPCP includes targeted programs to prevent initiation among youth and prevent tobacco use among pregnant women. Visit the webpage here. 

 

  • Tennessee Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Education and Support (TCAPES) supports the integration of mental healthcare into pediatric primary care. Visit the TCAPES Webpage here. 
  • The Children and Youth with Special Healthcare Needs assist children, youth, and transitioning adults who have complex chronic health conditions or developmental delays to access the resources and services to help them thrive. Visit the Webpage Here. 
  • The Tennessee Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program (TAPPP) is a state funded program that incorporates community-based awareness and prevention education through community services, education, collaborations and partnerships. This decreases unintended pregnancies among teens, as teen pregnancy can be associated with ACEs for children. 
  • The Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (TNCLPPP) provides case management, local outreach and education, and lead investigations to eliminate lead in a child’s environment, which poses a major environmental health risk to children. Visit the TNCLPPP Program Webpage Here. 
  • Family Health and Wellness has partnered with ETSU’s Strong Brain Institute to develop a Trauma-Informed Workplace designation. Workplaces can undergo training to receive the designation and improve physical and psychological safety among their workforce. Visit the TIW Page for more information.

Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth 

  • Resilient TN Collaborative is the statewide public education initiative focused on promoting culture change to emphasize Positive Childhood Experiences and prevent and mitigate ACEs The initiative aims to increase the potential of all children in TN to achieve thriving through public awareness, sustainable funding, and policy change.   • The Home Visiting Leadership Alliance (HVLA) and Young Child Wellness Council (YCWC) are two collaborative action groups that unite stakeholders across the state to focus on improving young child health and promoting Evidence Based Home Visiting.
