Tobacco Product Use Among High School Students


It’s not easy to talk about tobacco, vaping, and nicotine use, but having a positive, constructive conversation with no judgment or lectures is the best approach. Start the conversation early and share the facts about smoking, vaping, and other nicotine products. 

Is your child or teen using tobacco or nicotine products? Is there a young person in your life who is using tobacco and nicotine products? In 2019, 27.9% of Tennessee high school youth reported currently using any tobacco product, including e-cigarettes. Among Tennessee high school youth, 7.1% reported currently smoking cigarettes; nationally, the rate was 6.0%. In 2019 22.1% of high school students in Tennessee used electronic vapor products (e-cigarettes) on at least one day in the past 30 days.; nationally, the rate was 32.7%. Children and teens are vulnerable to the tobacco industry's marketing tactics, and e-cigarettes are setting millions of kids up for a lifetime of addiction to nicotine.
