Citizens' Correctional Academy

The Tennessee Department of Correction’s Citizens' Correctional Academy is a comprehensive six-week seminar designed to give local residents an in-depth understanding of the state’s correctional system and TDOC’s efforts to promote public safety. The academy provides Tennesseans with a rare “behind the wall” perspective on the operations, programs, and daily responsibilities of more than 6,000 dedicated TDOC employees.

Participants in the academy will explore a wide range of topics, including the department’s operational procedures, rehabilitation and programming initiatives, and public safety strategies. Attendees also have the opportunity to meet with TDOC’s executive leadership team, ask questions, and gain firsthand insights into the challenges and successes of working in corrections. Facility tours allow participants to experience the environment where these important public safety efforts take place.

Sessions are held once a week on Thursday evenings for six consecutive weeks. All sessions take place in the Nashville area from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., offering a convenient schedule for citizens interested in learning more about TDOC’s mission and work.

Sessions will be held at various Middle Tennessee TDOC locations (prisons and offices).  Information about the locations will be provided by email to those approved to attend.

Prison Operations

The Citizens’ Correctional Academy begins with an inside look at Prison Operations, the division responsible for managing a statewide population of approximately 20,000 individuals in custody.

Participants learn about the day-to-day responsibilities of operating secure facilities, including inmate movement, safety protocols, and classification processes. The session also highlights specialized programming and provides insight into daily life inside a correctional facility from both staff and incarcerated perspectives.

Clinical Services

Session two focuses on Clinical Services and TDOC’s commitment to providing comprehensive healthcare to individuals in custody.

Participants gain an understanding of the wide range of medical, mental health, and specialized care services provided across the system. The session emphasizes the importance of addressing both immediate health needs and long-term wellness as part of successful rehabilitation and reentry.

Rehabilitative Services

Session three highlights Rehabilitative Services and the department’s focus on preparing individuals for successful reintegration into their communities.

Participants explore a variety of evidence-based programs, including educational opportunities, vocational training, parenting courses, and other initiatives designed to build skills and support personal growth. This session demonstrates how rehabilitation efforts are structured to turn time served into time well spent.

OIC/CIU

Session four provides an in-depth look at Office of Investigations & Conduct, including units responsible for enforcement, interdiction, and internal investigations.

Participants learn how these specialized teams work together and alongside external law enforcement partners to detect contraband, investigate criminal activity, and apprehend individuals. The session highlights the coordinated efforts required to maintain safety and uphold the law.

Community Supervision/Reentry Simulation

Session five focuses on Community Supervision and the transition from incarceration back into the community.

Participants take part in a reentry simulation that illustrates common challenges such as securing employment, housing, and transportation. The session highlights the role of probation and parole officers in supporting individuals while ensuring accountability and public safety.

Graduation

The final session marks the completion of the Citizens’ Correctional Academy and provides an opportunity to reflect on the knowledge gained throughout the program.

Graduates leave with a comprehensive understanding of TDOC’s divisions, operations, and challenges. As program ambassadors, they are encouraged to share their experiences, increase public awareness, and contribute to safer communities across Tennessee.
