Legal Administrative Specialist – Civil Rights Enforcement Division
The Tennessee Attorney General’s Office is a full-service law firm, representing the State in litigation, transactional matters, and investigations and providing day-to-day legal advice to a wide variety of state entities and officials. The Office’s Civil Rights Enforcement Division enforces the Tennessee Human Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on certain protected characteristics in housing, employment, public accommodations, and education. The Division investigates discrimination complaints, resolves complaints through both formal and informal mediations, and when necessary, files lawsuits on behalf of complainants and the State of Tennessee. Its office is in Nashville, but the Division has statewide enforcement authority.
Job Overview:
The Legal Administrative Specialist supports the work of CRED by coordinating the Division’s administrative tasks. They work alongside other members of the Division, including attorneys, investigators, and complaint intake specialists, under the supervision of the Division Director.
Primary Job Duties:
- Answer phones, process mail, manage emails, and greet clients;
- Prepare, proofread, and file legal documents;
- Support attorneys with court filings and deadline tracking;
- Process confidential and sensitive legal documentation and correspondence;
- Maintain calendars and schedule appointments and meetings;
- Develop and maintain division records and files;
- Research and monitor cases; and
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree and the equivalent of 2 years of full-time staff administrative experience. Relevant work experience may be substituted for a bachelor’s degree.
- Excellent skills in analysis, organization, research, writing, and communication.
- Proficiency in software including Word, Access, and Excel.
