Civil Rights Enforcement Division

The Civil Rights Enforcement Division (CRED) of the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office investigates and prosecutes alleged violations of the state’s anti-discrimination laws with excellence to deliver positive outcomes for Tennesseans.

The Division investigates alleged violations of the Tennessee Human Rights Act and the Tennessee Disability Act. That includes claims of discrimination in employment, housing, education, and places of public accommodation because of a person’s protected characteristics. It also includes claims of malicious harassment of another person in the exercise of protected rights through an act or threat of violence, coercion, or destruction of property. Depending on the context, protected characteristics may include race, color, creed, religion, sex, age, national origin, familial status, or disability.

The Division also investigates claims of retaliation for reporting or participating in an investigation of unlawful discrimination.

Individuals who believe they have been discriminated against in violation of the Tennessee Human Rights Act or the Tennessee Disability Act may file a complaint with the Civil Rights Enforcement Division.
